Janwani, established in 2006 and now an independent trust supported by MCCIA, aims to make the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) the best place to live and work by promoting solid waste management in collaboration with various stakeholders and has achieved significant progress in coverage, segregation, E-waste collection and capacity building.
Zero Garbage Model
Janwani’s Zero Garbage Model focuses on achieving 100% door-to-door waste collection using a user fee-based system. It ensures 100% segregation of waste at the source, eliminates community waste containers and garbage vulnerable spots, and facilitates the diversion of dry recyclables close to the source. The model synchronizes primary waste collection with secondary transportation and promotes decentralized processing of wet waste.
Developed in 2011, this model was first successfully implemented in the Katraj Ward of Pune under the ‘Nirmal Katraj’ project, which received ISO 9001 certification. The model has since been replicated in other wards of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Supported and promoted by Pune Municipal Corporation, Cummins India Foundation, Adar Poonawalla Clean City, and others, Janwani has further adapted this model to succeed particularly in Pune’s slums. Its implementation in large slums like Yerwada and Kothrud has had a significant impact.
Currently, Janwani is raising awareness about waste segregation in Zone F of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, aligning with the activities of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Over 1.25 lakh families are benefiting from ongoing efforts to promote proper waste disposal, segregation, and e efforts waste management practices.
E-waste and Plastic Waste Awareness
In our technologically advanced world, the use of electronic gadgets is inevitable, and Pune, a major IT hub, faces increasing e-waste generation. While institutional e-waste is typically disposed of through authorized recyclers as per Government of India rules, household e-waste often remains uncollected due to logistical costs
Since 2012, Janwani has been raising awareness about e-waste and conducting e-waste collection drives in housing societies and educational institutions. In response to the growing use of single-use plastics, Janwani has also been educating citizens on reducing plastic usage and ensuring proper disposal.
Janwani facilitates the collection of e-waste and plastic waste, handing it over to authorized recyclers for scientific disposal. The goal is to establish permanent collection centers across the city where citizens can conveniently dispose of their e-waste.
Mission City Chakra – Promoting Circularity
Mission City Chakra is a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming Pune into a model of sustainability and circularity. Spearheaded by the Center for Sustainable Development at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and supported by Janwani NGO, this mission focuses on reducing waste generation, promoting recycling, and encouraging the reuse of materials. By fostering a culture of sustainability, Mission City Chakra aims to minimize environmental impact and create a healthier, more eco-friendly urban environment.
The primary objectives include implementing strategies to reduce waste generation across various sectors, such as corporate, residential, and public spaces. The initiative promotes recycling and the reuse of materials to extend their lifecycle and reduce the strain on natural resources. It also engages with corporate companies to eliminate single-use items like plastic bo les, paper cups, and tissues, advocating for eco-friendly alternatives. Education and awareness are crucial components, with drives and educational sessions informing citizens and organizations about sustainable practices and their benefits.
A key aspect of Mission City Chakra is the partnership with MCCIA and KPIT Technologies to recognize and reward companies demonstrating exceptional commitment to sustainability through the MCCIA-KPIT Sustainability Journey Award. This award encourages industries to implement sustainability initiatives that go beyond standard reporting practices
Abhaya Project - Sanitary Waste Disposal
In 2023, Janwani partnered with the successful startup ‘Padcare, ’ which has developed technology to process sanitary pads and create beautiful products from them. Padcare has designed special sanitary pad disposal bins placed in 40 schools of Pune Municipal Corporation. Janwani educates students on the use and disposal of sanitary pads in these bins and ensures the scientific disposal of the pads.
